MECS
The Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS) in Essex is a free, NHS-funded service that lets you see a local, accredited optometrist for recent-onset or minor eye problems without needing a GP referral first.
What MECS Covers
- Symptoms assessed: Red, sore, itchy, or painful eyes, dry eyes, gritty or sticky discharge, watery eyes, sudden flashes or floaters, ingrown or malpositioned lashes, and foreign bodies in the eye.
- What is excluded: Routine sight tests, new glasses prescriptions, or long-term management of major chronic conditions like established glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy (though referral filtering is available).
Eligibility & Access
- Who can use it: Available for patients registered with a local GP in Essex (split across North East Essex, Mid and South Essex, and West Essex pathways).
- Age limits: Open to both adults and children (children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult).
- Cost: Completely free on the NHS (no charge for the appointment or treatment).
- How to book: You do not need to wait for a GP appointment. You can self-refer by contacting a participating local optician (such as Specsavers or independent practices accredited under the scheme) by phone or via the directory.
